Santorini is an archipelago of five volcanic islands in the Cyclades group in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km southeast of mainland Greece. The islands were formed by an enormous volcanic explosion around 1600 BCE, which destroyed the earliest settlements and created the deep-water bay, known as the caldera, that defines the landscape today. What remains is a place built around contrast: white cubic buildings stacked along sheer cliff edges, black and red volcanic pebble beaches at sea level, ancient ruins buried at Akrotiri, and some of Greece's most distinctive wines grown in volcanic soil.
