Begin at Imjingak Pyeonghwa-Nuri Park, built to console Korean War refugees, where you'll find the Iron Horse train, Mangbaedan altar, the Unification Pond shaped like the Korean peninsula, and the Peace Bell. (20 min, admission included) Next, walk the Bridge of Freedom, built for 12,773 returning prisoners in 1953. The bridge sits against a beautiful natural backdrop and is a powerful place to reflect and photograph. (20 min, admission included) Proceed to the 3rd Infiltration Tunnel, discovered in 1978, 1,635 metres long, 2 metres high, 2 metres wide, capable of moving an entire division per hour. Walk through this extraordinary piece of Cold War history. (30 min, admission included) At the DMZ Theater, watch a 7–8 minute film providing a South Korean perspective on the Korean War, the DMZ's origins, and today's situation. (20 min, admission included) Finish at Dorasan Observatory atop Dorasan, the point closest to the North. Use the high-powered binoculars on the third floor to see North Korea's propaganda village inside the DMZ, and on clear days, as far as Gaesong. The bronze statue of Kim Il-sung may be visible. (30 min, admission included)
Full day exploring Seoul. Your guide will take you through the city's modern and historic quarters, Myeongdong shopping street, Namsan Tower, Bukchon Hanok Village, and Insadong's traditional craft market. Evening free to explore Seoul's lively food scene.
A dedicated heritage day centred on Gyeongbokgung Palace, the grandest of Seoul's Five Grand Palaces, built in 1395 and housing the National Folk Museum of Korea and the National Palace Museum. Watch the ceremonial Changing of the Guard. Continue to Bukchon Hanok Village to walk between 600-year-old traditional Korean houses. Visit Changdeokgung Palace and the Secret Garden. End the day at Insadong or Namdaemun Market.
A second excursion to the Demilitarised Zone for any sites not covered on Day 1, including the Red Suspension Bridge over the Imjin River. The DMZ is one of the most heavily fortified borders in the world and one of the most compelling historical sites in Asia.
A completely free day to relax at the hotel or explore Seoul at your own pace. Shopping options include Myeongdong (cosmetics and fashion), Dongdaemun Design Plaza (24-hour market complex), and Hongdae (youth culture and street food). Recommendations from your guide available.
Enjoy a relaxed breakfast at the hotel. Check out of your rooms and transfer to Incheon International Airport to catch your return flight to Nairobi.
