Six days in the northeast of Argentina: Jesuit mission ruins in the Misiones jungle and the thundering cataracts of Iguazú Falls.
During the 17th century, Jesuit missionaries from Spain headed deep into the forests of present-day northeastern Argentina and eastern Paraguay. The indigenous Guaraní people lived in these forests, and the Jesuits sought to convert them to Christianity. They built ornate baroque missions and community dwellings in the jungle, where missionaries and Guaraní lived side by side for a century and a half. Eventually the Jesuits were expelled, but the ruins of the missions remain, as well as some Guaraní communities. The mission sites are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This six-day tour combines the ruins with a visit to Iguazú Falls, one of the largest waterfall systems in the world, and includes the Grand Adventure boat ride beneath the cascades.

Arrive in Oberá, a city in the Misiones province of northeastern Argentina settled by Central European immigrants in the early 20th century. Transfer to your hotel, then take an afternoon city tour including the Parque de las Naciones, which represents the many immigrant communities that shaped the region. Overnight in Oberá.
Drive to the ruins of La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná, one of the best-preserved Jesuit missions in the region. The site dates from the early 18th century and features an ornate church, residences, and workshops set in the jungle. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it stands alongside the nearby Jesús mission. Overnight in the Misiones region.
Visit two more Jesuit mission ruins: Santa Ana and Loreto. Both date from the 17th century and were once thriving communities of thousands of Guaraní people living alongside Spanish Jesuit missionaries. Today the stone ruins rise from the forest floor. Overnight in the Misiones region.
Morning visit to San Ignacio Miní, the most intact of the Argentine Jesuit missions. The red sandstone walls of the church, the priests' residence, and the indigenous quarters are clearly defined and make for an outstanding site. In the afternoon, tour the Wanda Gem Mines, where semi-precious stones including amethyst, quartz, and topaz have been extracted from the basalt rock since the 1950s. Overnight near Puerto Iguazú.
Full day at Iguazú Falls on the Argentine side. Walk the upper and lower circuit trails for close-up views of the hundreds of waterfalls stretching nearly 3 km across the canyon. Then board the Grand Adventure boat for a high-speed ride directly beneath the falls. Overnight near Puerto Iguazú.
Final morning with more time at Iguazú Falls to explore any trails from the day before or return to a favourite viewpoint. Transfer to the airport for your return flight to Nairobi.
