Angama Mara sits on the edge of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, 610 metres above the Maasai Mara National Reserve below. The name means 'suspended in the air' in the Swahili language, an accurate description for a lodge that seems to float between sky and savannah, with unobstructed views stretching across the valley floor to the distant hills of Tanzania. The lodge consists of two separate camps, each with 15 luxury tented suites, positioned on the escarpment at slightly different vantage points. Each suite has a private deck and full glass frontage designed to frame the view; the Rift Valley landscape is the dominant feature of every room. Game drives descend the escarpment into the Maasai Mara plains below, where Angama's guides work the same productive territory as any other camp in the reserve. But what sets the experience apart is the altitude: sundowners on the escarpment edge, balloon flights that launch from the highest point above the Mara, and the sense of perspective that comes from watching the plains from above. This is where the film Out of Africa was shot in part, the feeling of being suspended above one of the world's great wildernesses has not diminished.
